At Copyright Power International, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the landmark partnership between Buma/Stemra and Salt. Back in March 2023, Salt announced the acquisition of Session, the creator collaboration and data management tool co-founded by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus, who has since joined Salt’s board. That same week Salt and Buma/Stemra signed a ten year agreement for Salt to provide royalty collection technology, marking a major step towards more efficient rights management in the Netherlands.

Our General Manager Sascha van Verseveld joined the latest Technical Consultation Committee meeting alongside fellow music publishers. There, she caught up on the Buma/Stemra x Salt transition. Buma/Stemra has been working diligently to ensure everything is in place, and they remain on track to complete the switch by the end of April 2025. We’re all hoping to see tangible progress by the next update in May.

While this transition comes with high expectations, it also presents an exciting opportunity. The advanced capabilities of Salt’s platform promise to streamline processes, automate routine tasks, and offer unprecedented transparency for rights holders. Faster data flows and clearer ownership splits mean that composers, songwriters and publishers can finally see exactly how their royalties are calculated and distributed.

If you’re eager for more background on how this partnership took shape, Buma/Stemra shared a detailed overview in their announcement article here: https://bumastemra.nl/en/samenwerking-salt-en-bumastemra/. Stay tuned to our news page for further updates as we continue to track this major development in royalty technology and music rights administration.
